Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Department of SKS Hospital
The Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Department at SKS Hospital helps people move better, manage pain and return to the activities that matter to them. Our physiotherapists treat patients of all ages — from office workers with neck and back pain and athletes with sports injuries, to elderly patients with arthritis and people relearning to walk after a stroke or joint replacement.
Physiotherapy is not just about massage or machines; it is an active, evidence-based treatment that uses specific exercises, hands-on techniques and patient education to restore normal movement and prevent problems from returning. As the teaching hospital of SKS Medical College & Research Centre, our practice follows current clinical guidelines, and every programme is based on a detailed assessment of your condition and goals.
The department offers post-operative rehabilitation, neuro-rehabilitation, electrotherapy (IFT, TENS and therapeutic ultrasound), manual therapy, exercise therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, posture correction and home exercise programmes. Our physiotherapists coordinate closely with orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology and pulmonology, so that for admitted patients rehabilitation can begin on the ward as early as it is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation at SKS Hospital, Mathura — appointments, tests, insurance and emergencies.
What conditions can physiotherapy help with?
Physiotherapy helps with back and neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, frozen shoulder, sports injuries, stiffness after surgery or fractures, stroke and other neurological conditions, balance problems, and recovery after heart attacks, lung disease and long ICU stays.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy?
You can book directly for many common problems such as back or neck pain. After surgery, injury or stroke, your treating doctor’s advice and reports help us plan safely. If your physiotherapist finds signs that need medical review, we will guide you to the right specialist.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition, how long you have had it and your goals. Some problems improve in a few sessions, while recovery after joint replacement or a stroke takes several weeks or months. Your physiotherapist will set a plan after the first assessment and review it regularly.
Can physiotherapy avoid surgery?
For many back, neck and joint problems — including slipped disc, early knee arthritis and some shoulder conditions — a structured physiotherapy programme can reduce pain and improve function enough that surgery is not needed. Where surgery is the better option, physiotherapy before and after helps you recover faster.
When should physiotherapy start after knee replacement?
Usually within a day of surgery, under the guidance of your surgeon and physiotherapist. Early movement reduces stiffness, prevents blood clots and helps you walk sooner. Regular exercises continue for several weeks to months at home. See our Knee Replacement page for details.
How does physiotherapy help after a stroke?
Stroke rehabilitation helps the brain and body relearn movement. Exercises improve strength, balance, coordination and walking, and training in daily activities builds independence. Starting early and continuing regularly gives a better chance of recovery.
What are IFT, TENS and ultrasound therapy?
These are electrotherapy treatments. IFT and TENS use mild electrical currents to reduce pain, and therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to ease pain and stiffness in muscles and joints. They are used alongside exercises, which remain the main part of lasting recovery.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Some exercises can cause mild discomfort or muscle soreness, especially early on, but treatment should not cause severe pain. Your physiotherapist will adjust the intensity to what you can manage and increase it gradually as you improve.
What should I wear for my physiotherapy session?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows the affected area to be examined and moved easily, along with comfortable footwear. Bring your reports, scan films and any previous prescriptions to your first visit.
When is back pain an emergency?
Come to the emergency department or call +91 86799 11029 immediately if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or buttocks, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or follows a serious fall or accident. These can be signs of nerve compression that needs urgent treatment.
Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Physiotherapy given during a hospital stay, for example after surgery, is usually covered. Coverage for outpatient sessions varies from policy to policy. SKS Hospital is empanelled with major insurers and TPAs, and our insurance desk can explain your coverage.
How can I book a physiotherapy consultation?
Book online through our appointment page, call +91 86799 11029, or visit the OPD registration counter. For sudden weakness, a serious injury or back pain with loss of bladder control, come directly to the emergency department or call +91 86799 11029.
