Pulmonology Department of SKS Hospital
Breathing problems at SKS Hospital — including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, pleural effusion and sleep-related breathing disorders — are seen in the Internal Medicine OPD by the general physician. There is no separate pulmonology doctor profile. Seriously ill patients are also cared for in the emergency department and ICU.
Breathing problems are very common in our region, driven by smoking and tobacco, dust, smoke from chulhas and crop burning, seasonal air pollution and infections. Many people live for years with a wheeze or cough, thinking it is normal. As the teaching hospital of SKS Medical College & Research Centre, we follow current national and international guidelines to identify the cause and give treatment that allows patients to breathe and live better.
The department offers pulmonary function testing (spirometry), bronchoscopy, pleural tap and chest drain insertion, sleep studies, inhaler therapy with hands-on training, non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP) and pulmonary rehabilitation. Tuberculosis is diagnosed and treated in line with the national TB programme. For critically ill patients, our ICU provides ventilator support round the clock, with X-ray, in-house diagnostics and laboratory services on the same campus.
Conditions treated and procedures offered
Recovery and treatment plans vary. Your doctor will advise after evaluation.
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
A simple breathing test that measures how much air your lungs hold and move, to diagnose asthma and COPD.
Bronchoscopy
A thin camera passed into the airways under sedation to look inside and take samples for infection or cancer.
Pleural Tap & Chest Drain
Removal of fluid or air from around the lung with a needle or tube, to ease breathlessness and find the cause.
Sleep Study
Overnight monitoring of breathing, oxygen and sleep to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea and plan CPAP treatment.
Non-invasive Ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP)
Breathing support through a close-fitting mask that helps tired lungs during COPD flare-ups and respiratory failure.

A supervised programme of breathing exercises, activity and education that helps people with lung disease feel less breathless.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Pulmonology at SKS Hospital, Mathura — appointments, tests, insurance and emergencies.
Who should I see for a breathing problem?
There is no dedicated pulmonology doctor at SKS Hospital at present. Book the Internal Medicine (General Physician) OPD for asthma, COPD, pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic cough, sleep apnoea and other breathing problems. For sudden severe breathlessness, come to emergency.
Is a cough lasting more than two weeks a concern?
Yes. A cough that lasts more than two weeks should be checked by a doctor to rule out tuberculosis, asthma, COPD, a lingering infection or other lung conditions — especially if it comes with fever, weight loss, night sweats, blood in the sputum or breathlessness.
How is asthma diagnosed?
Asthma is diagnosed through your symptoms, a clinical examination and a pulmonary function test (spirometry), which measures how well your lungs move air. The test is often repeated after an inhaler to see whether the airways open up, which is typical of asthma.
Are inhalers safe for long-term use?
Yes. Inhalers deliver a very small dose of medicine directly to the lungs, so they cause far fewer side effects than tablets or injections. They are not addictive. Stopping them on your own can lead to serious flare-ups, so always discuss any change with your doctor.
What is the difference between asthma and COPD?
Asthma often begins at a young age, comes and goes, and the airways usually open well with treatment. COPD mostly affects people over 40 with a history of smoking or long exposure to smoke and dust, and causes breathlessness that slowly worsens. Spirometry helps tell them apart.
Is tuberculosis curable?
Yes. Most cases of TB are completely curable when the full course of medicines is taken without breaks — at least six months for drug-sensitive TB. Stopping early can lead to drug-resistant TB, which is much harder to treat. TB treatment is also available free of cost under the national TB programme.
What is bronchoscopy and is it painful?
Bronchoscopy is a test in which a thin flexible tube with a camera is passed through the nose or mouth into the airways to look inside and take samples. It is done under local anaesthesia and light sedation, takes a short time, and most patients go home the same day.
Can loud snoring be a health problem?
Yes. Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, choking at night and daytime sleepiness can be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea, which raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and road accidents. A sleep study confirms the diagnosis, and CPAP therapy is very effective.
When is breathlessness an emergency?
Call +91 86799 11029 or come to the emergency department immediately if breathlessness is sudden or severe, if you cannot speak in full sentences, if the lips or fingertips turn blue, if there is chest pain, confusion or drowsiness, or if your reliever inhaler is not helping.
Which vaccines protect the lungs?
A yearly influenza (flu) vaccine and the pneumococcal vaccine are recommended for adults over 65 and for people with asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart or kidney disease. Your doctor will advise which vaccines are suitable for you.
Is treatment for lung diseases covered by insurance?
Cover under Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) depends on the package and clinical indication. Visit the insurance desk with your Ayushman card and photo ID, or call +91 86799 11029.
