Nephrology & Dialysis Department of SKS Hospital

The Nephrology & Dialysis Department at SKS Hospital specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and long-term care of kidney diseases. Our nephrologists see patients at every stage — from a slightly abnormal urine or creatinine report found during a routine check-up, to sudden kidney failure in the ICU, to people who need dialysis several times a week.

Kidney disease is often silent until it is late-stage, and diabetes and high blood pressure are the common causes in India. That is why we place special emphasis on early detection and on slowing the disease with the right medicines, blood pressure and sugar control, and diet. As the teaching hospital of SKS Medical College & Research Centre, our treatment follows current national and international guidelines.

The department runs a haemodialysis unit with scheduled sessions for regular patients and round-the-clock support for emergency dialysis. Services include AV fistula and dialysis catheter care, kidney biopsy, a structured chronic kidney disease (CKD) programme, diet and fluid counselling, and transplant counselling, evaluation and referral, with follow-up care after transplant. Close coordination with urology, cardiology, internal medicine and critical care ensures complete care for complex patients.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Nephrology & Dialysis at SKS Hospital, Mathura — appointments, tests, insurance and emergencies.

A nephrologist treats diseases of the kidneys, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, diabetic and high-BP related kidney damage, nephrotic syndrome, electrolyte imbalances and kidney failure, and manages dialysis and transplant care.

People with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a family history of kidney disease, repeated kidney stones or infections, and those who take painkillers regularly are at higher risk and should have their kidney function tested regularly.

Early kidney disease usually has no symptoms. As it progresses, there may be swelling of the feet or face, foamy urine, passing urine more often at night, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, itching and breathlessness. This is why regular tests matter for people at risk.

Serum creatinine with eGFR shows how well the kidneys filter blood, and a urine test for protein or albumin (ACR) shows early damage. A kidney ultrasound checks size and structure, and a kidney biopsy may be advised to find the exact cause in some conditions.

Acute kidney injury often recovers if treated early. Chronic kidney disease usually cannot be reversed, but its progress can often be slowed significantly with good control of blood pressure and sugar, the right medicines, diet and avoiding harmful drugs.

Dialysis is needed when the kidneys can no longer remove waste and extra fluid well enough — usually in end-stage kidney disease, or temporarily in severe acute kidney injury. Signs include severe swelling, breathlessness, very high potassium, persistent vomiting and confusion. Your nephrologist will advise when to start.

Most patients with kidney failure need haemodialysis two to three times a week, with each session lasting about four hours. The exact schedule depends on your kidney function, body size and blood tests. See our Dialysis page for details.

Yes. Along with scheduled sessions for regular patients, our dialysis unit supports emergency dialysis for patients with sudden kidney failure, dangerous potassium levels or fluid overload, in coordination with the emergency and ICU teams.

An AV fistula is a connection made between an artery and a vein, usually in the forearm, through a small operation. It creates a strong, long-lasting access point for haemodialysis with fewer infections than a catheter. It needs a few weeks to mature, so it is usually made well before dialysis is expected.

We provide transplant counselling, pre-transplant evaluation of the patient and donor, and referral to a transplant centre. After transplant, patients can continue follow-up with our nephrologists for medicines, blood tests and monitoring.

Yes. SKS Hospital is empanelled with major insurance companies and TPAs, and dialysis is covered under many policies. Our insurance desk will guide you on coverage and pre-authorisation — please bring your policy card and photo ID.
