Critical Care Department of SKS Hospital
The Critical Care Department at SKS Hospital looks after patients whose illness is too unstable for a general ward. Intensivists, trained ICU nurses and continuous monitoring are available day and night for conditions such as severe infection, respiratory failure, major surgery, poisoning, trauma and multi-organ problems.
Families are often meeting an ICU for the first time, frightened and full of questions. We explain what the machines are doing, what has improved, and what the next 24 hours are likely to involve. As the teaching hospital of SKS Medical College & Research Centre, care follows structured intensive-care practice, with infection-control steps that protect every patient in the unit.
The campus has ICU, ICCU, NICU, PICU and SICU support, mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation, invasive monitoring including central lines, bedside dialysis support with the nephrology team, blood and component therapy from the in-house blood bank, nutrition support and daily family counselling. The emergency department is the usual front door; patients are moved to intensive care as soon as they need it.
Conditions treated and procedures offered
Recovery and treatment plans vary. Your doctor will advise after evaluation.
Mechanical Ventilation
A machine that takes over breathing through a tube when the lungs or the drive to breathe have failed.
Non-invasive Ventilation
Breathing support given through a mask, without a tube, for patients who can still protect their airway.
Dialysis
Bedside dialysis when the kidneys fail during a critical illness, planned with the nephrology team.
Blood & Component Therapy
Transfusion of blood or components from the in-house blood bank when bleeding or severe anaemia demands it.
Sepsis Care
Immediate fluids, antibiotics and organ support for life-threatening infection, started from the emergency door.
Poisoning & Snake Bite Care
Monitoring and specific treatment for poisoning and snake bite, begun in emergency and continued in ICU.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Critical Care at SKS Hospital, Mathura — appointments, tests, insurance and emergencies.
Can family visit ICU patients?
Yes, during fixed visiting hours and with the infection-control steps the staff explain, including hand hygiene. Large groups cannot be inside the unit. Doctors also brief the family on the patient’s condition so you are not relying only on a few minutes at the bedside.
What is the difference between ICU and HDU?
ICU is for patients who need life support, such as a ventilator or medicines to maintain blood pressure, or who need very close monitoring. A high-dependency unit is for patients who need more nursing and observation than a general ward but are more stable. The team moves patients between them as the illness changes.
When does a patient need a ventilator?
When breathing has failed or is about to fail — for example in severe pneumonia, unconsciousness, or extreme exhaustion — a ventilator takes over the work of breathing through a tube, so the body can recover. Some patients can be helped first with oxygen or a mask (non-invasive ventilation). The doctor will explain which is being used and why.
What should I do in a breathing or collapse emergency?
Call +91 86799 11029 and come to the emergency department immediately. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person, and do not delay for an OPD slip. Emergency and intensive care are on the same campus.
Do you treat poisoning and snake bite?
Yes. Suspected poisoning and snake bite are emergencies and are managed in emergency and intensive care with monitoring, supportive treatment and specific medicines when they are indicated. Bring the medicine strip or, if it can be done safely, a clear description of the snake — do not waste time catching it, and do not cut or suck the wound.
Is dialysis available for ICU patients?
Bedside dialysis support is arranged with the nephrology team when the kidneys fail during a critical illness. It is started for medical reasons such as dangerous potassium, fluid overload or severe acidosis, not as a routine attachment to every admission. See our dialysis page for the wider kidney service.
Why are so many tubes and machines used?
Each one has a job: oxygen and the ventilator for breathing, a drip for fluids and antibiotics, a line for blood-pressure support, a urine catheter to measure kidney output, and monitors to catch a change in seconds. They are removed as soon as they are no longer needed. Ask the nurse if you want any of them explained.
How do you prevent infections inside the ICU?
Hand hygiene, limited visitors, sterile technique for lines, careful mouth and skin care, and antibiotics used only for the right duration are standard. If a patient needs isolation, the staff will tell the family what that means. These rules protect your relative and the person in the next bed.
Who looks after children and newborns in intensive care?
Newborns are cared for in the NICU and children in the PICU, with the paediatrics team, rather than being placed in an adult ICU. Cardiac patients may be in the ICCU with cardiology, and patients after major surgery in the surgical ICU. One campus, separate units matched to the patient.
Is ICU treatment covered by insurance?
Intensive care is usually covered by major health insurance policies, and SKS Hospital is empanelled with insurers and TPAs for cashless admission. Bring the policy card, photo ID and previous papers as early as you can so pre-authorisation can start. The billing team will explain estimated costs as the situation allows.
How can I book a critical care consultation?
ICU admission is arranged through the emergency department or by the treating specialist — it is not a routine OPD booking. If someone is seriously ill, call +91 86799 11029 or come straight to emergency. For a planned opinion after an ICU stay, book through our appointment page or call +91 86799 11029.
